How car-ma works

Do you believe in the laws of karma? I do, and let me tell you why……

My car engine recently died, and if you’ve ever had that happen, you know how much that s–ks! While it was aggravating and stressful, I tried to see the glass half full and keep my head above water. What message could I take from this unfortunate event? What was the universe reminding me about?  So I set about determined to find the positive messages that might be woven into this ‘uber’ frustrating experience (pun intended, and no I didn’t take any ubers!). Here are a few of my lessons learned.

Lesson #1: I am so lucky to have a car. When I found out the next day that my car’s engine had died and that it would not be a quick fix, I was crushed. Boom, just like that – no car. Whoa. Wait, what?! I can’t go to the store, the gym, the office, or school. It made me feel so grateful to even have a car in the first place. Compassion for those who do not. Life is very different whether you do or do not have a car.

Lesson #2: I am not alone. Even though I may be alone in an existential sense, I have a strong support network of people who were there for me, and I so appreciated it. Not only did my assistant coach Bob drive back from the high school to Route 64 highway and sit with me until AAA came, but he then drove me all the way home after practice, 20 miles out of his way! I also had other friends checking car rental prices and coming up with other ideas for me.

Lesson #3: Figuring things out one day at a time. Dealing with my mechanic, learning about engines, calling salvage companies, negotiating for my car value, asking for more, going to DMV. This was great life practice!

Lesson #4: It’s okay to receive! My wife had been wanting a car for a few years, so she decided she would give me her 13-year old car, and she would get a car instead. Here I was, ready and nervous to embrace the challenge of figuring out what to do next, and she simply gave me Isabella (her car). Done. That was way easier than I was expecting!

Lesson #5 – Karma mysteriously works its ways. About a week after the event, as I was settling in to driving Isabella and still feeling like I got off too easy, Lisa reminded me that I had actually bought Isabella for her 13 years ago. So maybe karma is a boomerang! The karma that I had created years ago, was simply rebounding its way back to me.

Grateful for the universe, and happy to have car-ma work with me.
